Big Lakes to become Unesco's
bioreserves?
UNESCO’s Programme on Man and the
Biosphere (MAB) (MAB) develops the
basis, within the natural and the social
sciences, for the sustainable use and conservation of biological diversity, and for the improvement of the relationship between people and their environment globally.
One of the Big Lakes, Päijänne in Finland, is now making a case to become a part of this programme. The Big Lakes project and network provide a good platform for proving that Päijänne is indeed worth adding to the programme.
The initiative has been issued in Finnish as a brochure Biosfaari_esite_2004.pdf

International Big Lakes Conference
Integrating_cultural_and_natural_heritage_into_planning_and_development
was held 16 and 17 June 2003 - Asikkala, Finland

The Conference focused on information
sharing between specialists on cultural and
natural heritage, and between municipal
and regional planners. Participants
discussed also how the heritage factors
could better be taken into account in
business development.
Participants came from the Nordic lake
regions. Regional councils, municipalities,
and relevant universities, colleges,
entrepreneurs, governmental or non-governmental organisations around the lakes and decision makers were invited.
The host of the Conference, a Päijänne enthusiastic Mr. Kyösti Toivonen, laid foundation for the discussions through presenting an idea about common_history_as_a_source_of_development: he spoke about times when water did not separate, but united people.
Each lake presented her cultural and natural heritage.
Working_Group_Discussions focuced on four questions:
Big_Lakes_Wireless was launched.
The project organises three international Big Lakes Conferences:
- 16. - 17.6 2003 Asikkala, Finland
- Summer 2004 Vänern and/or Fegen & Bolmen, Sweden
- Summer 2005 Mjösa, Norway
Conference in Sweden aims at benchmarking in spatial planning, and the last (Norway 2005) takes a broader view on how to integrate cultural and natural heritage into the regional development processes.
